Recording News!
Hey hey punters, I know it’s been a few blue moons since I’ve done one of these, so I’ll start by apologising for the absence of my absurd anecdotes (probably too many ‘a’ words just there).
“So what have you been up to, Foreshizzle?” you ask. Well a couple of weeks ago we made our way over to Melbourne, to Hothouse Studio in St Kilda to be specific, with the intention of recording some new tunes. Without giving too much away, we ended up tracking the most part of 5 new songs which will constitute a brand spanking new EP (the band’s third). We have no idea as to a release date at this stage as there is a lot of work still to be done on the tracks, but at least the bun is in the oven, so to speak. So yeah, we’re pregnant with a baby EP, which is in it’s fetal stage. It’s a healthy fetus though. Fetus.
Anyway, I couldn’t be bothered doing the cool band thing and keeping a regular diary so I’ll just try to recap the week’s proceedings for those of you who care or who have nothing better to do in the entire world at this point in time. On the first night, after we’d knocked the froth off a few cooper’s longnecks at the vineyard we coined the phrase “undie crunching” which is far too explicit to go into any sort of detail here, but I can assure you that it’s gonna be the next big thing… keep an eye out for it ya’ll. Just a warning though, don’t try to go through your 80’s playlist on your ipod changing the lyrics of every song to something to do with undie crunching… cos you’ll kill it.
We spent the next couple of days rehearsing in a room under the ‘gone too far bar’ Revolver, and eating Thai food upstairs. I went and saw The Strokes play a pretty kick arse set on the Sunday night at festival hall and afterwards went on a wild goose chase with a couple of former child stars trying to find some joint called ‘Ding Dong’. We ended up at the gone-too-far-bar…
So anyway, we spent a total of five days tracking and eating cheese freezies at Hothouse with engineers Craig Harnath and Finn Keene (I hope I spelt it right mate!), and a couple of dogs called Daisy and Jub Jub. Drums and bass were tracked over the first 2 days and guitars and vocals were pretty much knocked off over the next three. Craig and Finn are two of the fastest and most thorough users of pro tools I’ve seen, so mad props to them. They’re also top blokes.
Okay now if you don’t care for musical geek talk you should probably ignore this next paragraph… We ended up using a couple of basses, namely a 1963 Fender P bass and an inSpecter gadget 5 string. We primarily used my VOX AC-30 and a Peavey 5150 for guitars, but a Mesa dual rectifier and an ENGL got a bit of a run too. Guitar-wise we used almost every guitar in the studio, but mainly my 52 reissue Fender Tele, my super heavy Les Paul, a 1973 Telecaster Deluxe, a 1972 Gibson 335, and a bunch of other Les Pauls. Pedals we used included a Tubescreamer 808, an MXR Microamp, a Rat, a Boss Giga Delay, a Hotcake, a Sherlock Tremelo, and a Keeley compressor.
Enough of that. Well… there really isn’t much else to tell. We were so busy working most of the time we didn’t have much of an opportunity to do much else. So we should apologise to all of our friends in m town we didn’t manage to catch up with while we were there. We did, however, manage to down a few bevvies in celebratory fashion on the last night of recording, resulting in hotel room fun with eggs and microwaves.
So that’s the latest from us, I hope you can all come along to Rocket tonight to catch our set. If not, we have a couple more bigger Adelaide shows in the works, and be sure to stay tuned for more info on the new EP.
